First Match Trailer Review, strength doesn’t seek gender’s consent!

First Match is an upcoming Netflix emotional, gritty drama movie, Writer and Director Olivia Newman’s first feature film. Starring Elvire Emanuelle, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Colman Domingo, Jharrel Jerome and Jared Kemp.

First Match
What Trailer Depicts?
Trailer portrays a teenage girl from Brooklyn’s Brownsville neighbourhood who, after having spent several years in foster care, decides to join the all-boys’ high-school wrestling team in her attempt to impress and connect to her estranged father (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), recently released from prison. She soon proves she has a talent for this sport and that she doesn’t give up without a fight. That’s just how it goes for someone who’s used to being on her own. She’s just a kid, fighting to make space for herself in a world that seems like it was fully formed before she even got there. The only strength she has is the strength she takes, so she decides to become the first girl in her high school wrestling team.

The trailer features Monique navigating a men’s world, participating at matches, and juggling her personal struggles. “Listen, you will be a legend. And not just in some high school yearbook.” her father tells her one night, before an event. The pressure from the team’s coach does not lack, since he states “there’s no such thing as losing”. “There’s only winning and learning.” he also tells the young wrestlers in one of the scenes. At the end of the trailer, Monique is told “Now you’re gonna sink or swim”.

First Match
What’s absorbing?
Newman does a clever job of complicating the unavoidable gender dynamics of it all, angling the intensely choreographed sparring matches into an understated love triangle between Monique, her only friend (Jharrel Jerome), and her new jock crush (Jared Kemp). These teens are very literally wrestling with their feelings.

First Match
This gritty drama Will be available on Netflix on 30th March, 2018.
