Harley Quinn Spinoff to be R-rated, Girl Gang Film Says Margot Robbie

In last few years as DC universe stumbled on its way to catch up with gigantic Marvel Universe all was not utterly wrong in this struggle. DC delivered some memorable characters and movies which are still able to keep them afloat. Margot Robbie‘s portrayal of Harley Quinn is one of those characters that rose to stardom pretty quickly and became a huge fan favorite. Her style and chemistry with Joker was the only highlight of the rather bland movie. DC noticed this craze for the Harley Quinn and soon started putting together various plans to give fans something more. The reports for Harley Quinn spin-off are doing round for quite a time now. As per them, we have one Joker & Harley movie followed by Gotham Sirens directed by David Ayer of Suicide Squad and far as per new updates one Harley Quinn movie with a girl gang.

In her recent interview with Collider, Margot Robbie shed some light on this speculation and said “I pitched the idea of an R-rated girl gang film including Harley, because I was like, ‘Harley needs friends.’ Harley loves interacting with people, so don’t ever make her do a standalone film. She’s got to be with other people; it should be a girl gang. I wasn’t seeing enough girl gangs on screen, especially in the action space. So that was always a big part of it.”

Robbie who is currently busy with her noir thriller titled Terminal will be acting as a producer on this one. DC also began a hunt for a possible director for the movie, and they have narrowed it down on Cathy Yan. However, Margot Robbie wanted some female director to take the lead as she added “And then, of course, having a female director to tell that story. And giving a female director the chance to do big budget stuff. They always get ‘Here’s the tiny little film’… I was like, ‘I love action. I love action films. I’m a girl. What, are we meant to only like a specific thing’?” So it was hugely important to find a female director for this, if possible. But at the end of the day — male, female — the best director gets the job and Cathy Yan was the best director.”

Her reasoning for female director is entirely plausible and the best example of that is DC’s movie Wonder Woman. The film directed by Patty Jenkins is the only movie which serves as a saving grace for the whole universe. And Robbie is somewhat right as a female director will have more understanding of the dynamics of the movie which ultimately revolves around girl gang.

Robbie also spoke with people at Moviefone and cleared that she doesn’t know much about the other Harley Quinn related projects. She has kept all her focus on developing this movie with screenwriter Christina Hodson (Bumblebee). She added “I want to make a girl gang, an R-rated film that Harley is a part of, And we started working on it from there. Meanwhile, over the course of the next few years, the studio was exploring other Harley Quinn spin-offs. But I was not a part of those versions, I was always focused on this one with Christina… I know that they were exploring ‘Gotham City Sirens’ with David Ayer, and I know they were exploring a Joker and Harley Quinn movie, and they were exploring doing I don’t know what else. I wasn’t a part of those. I was focusing on this. I kept presenting it to the studio until they felt it was at a point where they were ready to do it. And now we’re all in.”

The excitement of Margot Robbie behind the Harley Quinn’s R-rated version is high and hope that also gives us an amazing movie from the butchered DC universe. The girl-gang movie around the most mischevious villain surely looks interesting on paper and we will have to wait and see how they bring it to reality. What are your thoughts on this one?
