Huawei Kirin 980: World’s Most Powerful and Intelligent Chip


Chinese tech giant, Huawei, has already been active since the start of the global consumer electronics trade show in Germany, with the launch of Honor Magic in the smartphone range, and today, at the ongoing IFA 2018 event at Berlin, Huawei officially announced the major upgrade in its powerful Kirin chipset, and launched Huawei Kirin 980 at the keynote. Huawei claims Kirin 980 to be the world’s most powerful and intelligent chip right now which is 37% better in performance compared to the current powerful chipset for Android smartphones, that is, Qualcomm Snapdragon 845. Not only this, according to the company the new Huawei Kirin 980 is the world’s first chipset which is fabricated using the 7nm process, housing more transistors per unit area.

Talking more about the new Huawei Kirin 980, the AI-based chip is manufactured entirely by Huawei and powers a majority of Huawei Honor smartphones. The Huawei Kirin 980 will be the world’s first processor based on the Cortex-A76, the main reason behind changing the Cortex architecture is to increase the efficiency, now rather than using the mainstream three-layered approach for data computing, Huawei Kirin 980 feature two paired super-big Cortex-A76 cores and a quad-core Cortex-A55 configuration, which process the data with more efficiency as compared to current chipset. Not only this, among the many world’s first titles, Kirin 980 also hold the title for world’s first Mali-G76 GPU based processor, which makes the new Kirin 178-percent more efficient or we can say 46-percent more powerful than last year’s graphics chip by ARM. Also, Huawei has compared the latest Kirin chipset with the Snapdragon 845, and in testing by the company, in all parameters, Kirin 980 beats SD 845. According to the company, in gaming, the Kirin 980 has 32% less power consumption and better performance, the 980 chipset produces 22% higher frame rates as compared to SD 845.

Last year, Huawei launched Kirin 970 chipset, which was the world’s first SoC to feature a neural processing unit or we can say the AI capabilities, and now the upgraded Kirin 980 is the world’s first chipset with dual NPU,  which means that Kirin 980 comes with improved AI computing capabilities. Also, the Kirin 980 will be supporting the WiFi connectivity speed up to 1.7Gbps in the smartphones. Compared to the Kirin 970, which is created using the 10nm process, Kirin 980 is created using 7nm process node, which is world’s first processor chip to be built using this tech, which creates space for more transistors per unit area, in Kirin 980, 6.9 billion transistors are situated per 1cms.

With the new Kirin 980, Huawei will be providing not only better performance and battery efficiency but also better AI computing and better mobile photography. The Kirin 980 is expected to power the upcoming Huawei Mate 20 series and Huawei P30 smartphone range, which is scheduled to launch next year.
