A glance at Karenjit Kaur.
Karenjit Kaur- The Untold Story Of Sunny Leone opens taking us to 1994 where we see Karenjit Kaur reciting Gurubani in a Gurudwara and perfectly portraying the honesty and modesty which the daughter of a conservative Sikh family bears. As the episode drags ahead she is on the sets for a lingerie ad, the first project which demands that she shed her clothes and inhibitions in front of strangers. The significance obviously is on the girl bought up in a conservative Indian household deciding to become an adult star and then uncovering her break in Bollywood.
The career curve is astonishing and the story even more so. We confront a fearless and bold Sunny Leone who is incapable but ambitious like any young school girl from a middle-class family. She is prepared to walk a dog and sell lemonade so that she can wear a $60 gown for a school dance – a dress her mother never wants to see her in. The narrative is held together by the actor who narrates her life story in an interview with an obnoxious journalist. A scene shows up in the series where she shares with us, what keeps her apart is her guts and she has always been unrepentant for her decisions in life and career choices. A little attention seeker was her infamous Bhupinder Chaubey interview wherein conversation she turns out as bold and proud about the choices she made and further crawls her journey from a girl next door to India’s most googled celebrity, her out of the box transformation from an adult film star into Bollywood’s top female actor.
Karenjit Kaur, A one time watch.
The biopic is simply absorbing because it is a superb story. The series masterly cuts between different periods of Sunny’s life – from growing up in a traditional household and bullied in school to her foray into modelling and adult films to her rise to stardom and her family’s discovery and reaction to her career. It is a one-time watch series but yeah, undoubtedly shares a lot of things to be learnt which includes, being unapologetic and bold for your choices and steps you take to bridge up your life.
