MediaTek unveiled their all new budget chipset. The MediaTek Helio A22 is the latest offering by MediaTek. The new Mediatek chipset has a quad-core processor on board.
The Rise of Mediatek
Classically famous for producing chipsets for budget phones, MediaTek has always made chipsets that power through most things. The Helio P series is used in some upper mid-range phones. MediaTek has grown a lot in the past years. But unlike most companies which ignore their roots, MediaTek plans to keep developing its budget offerings.
The Mediatek Helio A22
The New Mediatek quadcore Helio A22 is the first entry in the new ‘A’ lineup. These chips are touted as a direct competition to Snapdragon 400 series, especially the Snapdragon 429. The chip shares many similarities with the Snapdragon 429, especially the use of same ARM Cortex A53 cores. The MediaTek Helio A22 has clocked all 4 cores to a maximum clock speed of 2GHz, slightly more than Snapdragon 429.
The new Mediatek chipset also supports upto 4GB of LPDDR3 RAM and 6GB of LPDDR4x RAM. The Helio A22 will also be MediaTek’s first chipset based on a 12nm process. This is a welcome news for the company as until recently, the budget offerings were based on a lousy 28nm process.
The new Mediatek chipset also allows support for dual-cameras upto a 13MP+8MP combo, or a single camera upto 21MP. The chipset also supports AI features and in extension, Face Unlock.
Our Take on the New Mediatek chipset
The release of new MediaTek quadcore Helio A22 means 2 things. Since the chipset has a processor good enough to handle most tasks, more and more mid-range phones will go with a cheaper alternative and give rise to a whole new generation of media-centric phones. The other consequence will be the rise of powerful budget phones. We may see phones under $100 exhibiting performance current $200 phones do, which is a pretty big deal. We can’t wait more companies to adopt the chipset!
