What “THE RITUAL” is all about?
The Ritual takes place in a rugged European forest when four long time British friends from University, reuniting after the tragic death of their best mate set out to hike through the Scandinavian wilderness. But a wrong turn leads them into the dark and mysterious forests of Norse legend, where an ancient evil still exists and stalks them at every turn. Finding themselves alone, lost, and seemingly in the sights of an evil, lurking presence that seeks to do them harm.
Luke (Rafe Spall) is haunted by his friend’s death during a convenience-store robbery in which he was too afraid to intervene. To mark his passing, he and three friends go on a hiking holiday in Sweden. When one of them sprains his ankle, an ill-advised shortcut through a spooky forest is taken, and very nasty things happen. As they dig deep into the woods, they were taken aback to see ritualistically dismembered animals and surreal signs of witchcraft. But they’re trapped. They’ve lost their bearings, they’re tired out of their wits and they’re convinced that someone – or something – is following their every move. And just then, when things are looking absolutely hopeless, one of them says: “Guys, it’s about to get dark real soon.” All this evil signs clearly suggests that they are not alone in the vast forest. As the group trudges forward, an unknown presence makes itself felt, putting the lives of the hikers at stake.
However, the place is full of assortment of weird apparatus that indicates some kind of a ritual. Asleep in the night, they dream of horrible nightmares. With these feelings their distrust of each other surfaces and they begin to turn on each other. As they try to escape the shack and the woods, they feel a presence around them. A presence that wants them to come out with the truth and express their true feelings. Intent to not let them leave.
Is the Ritual worth a watch?
Relying on chilling sounds and accomplished camera work, the movie is scary as hell, and includes some shocking visuals of the dead victims of a mystifying evil, making it more spine chilling with multiple terrifying sequences and bloody deaths. Accelerating the tension is conflict within the ranks based on unresolved emotions after an earlier tragedy happened with their gang. This film portrays mature characters, mature emotions, and the scares are never taken lightly. Solid fare for horror fans!
There are barely any loud noises. On the contrary, the film relies on some truly exquisite sound design, like the noise of rustling trees and flowing water, and very well executed pacing. Director understands that for true horror – deep-rooted, chill, and unshakable – mood and restraint should be favoured over anything else.
A Thumbs Up, with 4/5 Stars!
