Sony is planning on releasing its most premium smartphone ever. The Xperia XZ2 Premium releases on July 30 in US, and will be the greatest Sony smartphone in many terms. The phone will have the greatest specs and the highest price ($999). But not just that, the Xperia XZ2 Premium weight reveals point it to be the heaviest flagship.
Heavy Phones vs Light Phones
While heavy phones and smartphones were common in the early days, companies have started making them sleeker and lighter. Most phones these days are less than 200g. Light phones are easier to carry around, but often lead to shoddy build or weak performance and battery. Sony seems to believe that we can bear a bit extra weight for more features.
How much is the Xperia XZ2 Premium Weight?
The Xperia XZ2 Premium weight profile measures at around 232g. This is a huge number as compared to most phones. The closest high-end phone is the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active, which has rugged parts for protection, and still weighs only 208g. Note that we limited our search to phones that you can still buy in 2018 and are relevant.
Why is it so Hefty?
Most of the heft comes from the fact that the phone is made of an aluminium chassis, covered in 3D glass from both sides. These materials add a lot to the device weight. Along with the build materials, the phone also has a huge 3540 mAh battery and a large 5.8-inch 4K screen, increasing the weight to such high levels.
Not just heavy, the phone is a bit thick too. With the Xperia XZ2 Premium thickness measuring at about 11.9 mm max, the phone sure is quite thick.
While popular opinion might be to decrease weight and thickness of smartphones, we actually don’t mind it. The reports suggest the weight is quite evenly distributed so the phone is comfortable to hold. Plus we do like a device with some heft, as it makes the phone feel heavy duty. Also, the thickness isn’t so much that it will be an issue. According to us, the weight isn’t that much of a deal-breaker as it only adds to the ‘premium’ feel of the phone. What are your thoughts?
