YouTube to take on Netflix and Amazon Prime with its own Originals

With the growing popularity of Web Series and Original Contents in India, YouTube is planning to launch its own scripted series and other original programming in the country. YouTube will be competing with companies like Netflix and Amazon that are investing in local language programming for online audiences around the world. This thing is not just intended for India but other countries like France, Germany, Japan and Mexico as well.

In an interview on Friday, the company’s global head of original programming, Susanne Daniels, said that the programming will cover a number of genres, from music documentaries to reality shows, and from scripted dramas to talk shows. The programs will be produced in local languages and subtitled or dubbed for other markets too.

Some of the programs will appear on YouTube Premium (formerly called YouTube Red) which is a monthly subscription based service whereas other content will be available on YouTube’s free service with advertising. Globally, the company’s original content is produced under YouTube Originals banner, and is available mostly on YouTube Premium, which is not available in India just yet, but is expected to be launched in the country soon.

The first original shows from YouTube debuted on its premium service in 2016, starting with series from some of the platform’s most popular video creators. It added programming from Hollywood stars and also released a batch of children’s shows including Emmy-winning “Fruit Ninja Frenzy Force.”

Although in India, YouTube already has released a talk show based on Cricket which has performed well beyond the expectations, said Daniels. The programmings available on the platform will be ranging from dramas featuring award-winning actors to comedies with top YouTube creators and documentaries involving popular artists.
